Playhouse Theatre

Based on the book by Kerry Kennedy Cuomo.

Pulitzer prize winner Ariel Dorfman's latest play will be staged in London for one night only to raise funds for Index on Censorship. 'Speak Truth to Power' dramatises the lives of real human rights activists from around the world. It was first performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC where the cast included Alec Baldwin, Sigourney Weaver and John Malkovich. Ariel Dorfman's world famous play 'Death and the Maiden' (later a Roman Polanski film) was first published by Index.

Index On Censorship is the magazine of free expression. It was founded 28 years ago in response to a plea from Soviet dissidents facing show trials. A group of leading western intellectuals sent a telegram of support to Moscow, stating: 'we admire your courage, think of you and will help in any way possible.' The signatories included Cecil Day Lewis, Yehudi Menuhin, WH Auden, Igor Stravinsky and Stephen Spender who went on to found Index in the same spirit as the original telegram.
