Review / Synopsis.

Based on the novel by Evelyn Waugh, this film centres around three main characters, Brenda Last (Kristen Scott Thomas), Tony Last (James Wilby), and John Beaver (Rupert Graves).

Set in the countryside of Hetton Abbey, it tells the story of trust, betrayal, and unbelievable selfishness. In between the two world wars, Brenda and Tony are happily if rather boringly married. They have a young son, John Andrew, whom Tony is devoted to.

Along comes the good-looking Beaver, who lets it be known to Brenda that he could easily fall for her. Brenda being the selfish type does so rather quickly, offering herself into an affair with the rogue.

Brenda is so selfish she will marry Beaver and live off payments provided to her through her husband, who incidentally believes everything he is told by everyone. Not wanting to spoil the film, all I can say is that it has a superb ending which I'm sure you will enjoy.

Starring James Wilby, Kristin Scott Thomas, Rupert Graves, Anjelica Huston, Judi Dench and Alec Guiness.
Stephen James.
